Section 1: Principles of the Armed Forces Covenant
We, Alstonefield Parish Council, recognise the value that serving personnel, reservists, veterans, the bereaved and Armed Forces families contribute to our country and our community. We pledge to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant:
• Members of the Armed Forces community should not face disadvantage arising from their service in the provision of public and commercial services.
• In some circumstances, special consideration may be appropriate, particularly for those who have given the most, including the injured and the bereaved.
Section 2: Demonstrating our commitment
In keeping with our responsibilities and resources as a small parish council, we will seek to uphold these principles by:
• Treating members of the Armed Forces community fairly in the exercise of our functions, recognising any relevant disadvantage arising from Service life.
• Considering, where relevant and within our lawful powers and discretion, the circumstances of serving personnel, reservists, veterans and their families when making decisions affecting them.
• Promoting awareness of the Armed Forces Covenant by publishing our pledge and a link to official information on the Parish Council website.
• Signposting residents who seek assistance to appropriate Armed Forces support organisations and public services, where practicable.
• Recognising the contribution of the Armed Forces community through appropriate local remembrance and community activities, as determined by the Council.
• Being mindful, in our role as a local public body and employer, of the particular circumstances of reservists, veterans and Armed Forces families where these are relevant.
We will invite comments from residents on how these commitments are being met and will review our published information and pledges when appropriate.
These commitments will be delivered within the Council’s statutory powers, responsibilities and available resources.
